Athens-Clarke Literacy Council

Program Description: The Athens Clarke Literacy Council is an umbrella organization promoting adult literacy programs in Athens-Clarke County. ACLC holds volunteer training for those wishing to be involved in adult literacy instruction, directs volunteers to adult literacy programs needing assistance, and links adult students to appropriate organizations for instruction.

Additional Information: Trains mentors and matches them with students in the Clarke County School District; mentors are asked to make a one year commitment to the program and are required to spend a minimum of one hour per week at school with their students.

The mission of the Goodwill GoodGuides™program is to empower youth and their families to succeed by helping teens finish school and ransition into productive careers through the guidance of trusted adults. Goodwill® GoodGuides™ is aimed at 12- to 17-year-olds who face such risk factors as school failure, juvenile delinquency, family violence and other challenges. Additional Information: Dedicated to promoting healthier outcomes for children ages 4-15 with a primary focus on those with incarcerated parents. Mentors spend three hours per week with a child. Mentors must complete an application, personal interview, submit to a background check, and maintain motor vehicle insurance. Mentors are provided free training.
